The Automotive Technology program at York Technical College puts you on track for one of today’s most promising careers.

York Tech’s Automotive Technology curriculum prepares students to go out and become automotive technicians and provides updated training for those already working. Students learn general automotive repair, servicing, and diagnostics, which includes theoretical and practical training in engine overhaul, engine performance, automotive transmissions, power trains, steering and suspension and brakes, as well as electrical/electronic systems and air conditioning. As automobiles become increasingly complex, individuals with this skillset are needed, and careers for service technicians are increasing to accommodate that need.

Students may earn an associate degree in Automotive Technology, a program that is certified by the National Automotive Technicians Educational Foundation (NATEF). Then graduates are prepared to begin the process of becoming an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certified Mechanic.

IMG_2263An Automotive Collision Repair certificate is also offered at York Tech. This program is designed in conjunction with the Automotive Technology program and addresses all aspects of auto body repairs, detailing, polishing, metalworking, plastic repairs, panel replacements, refinishing, structural repair, electrical accessories, hazardous material safety, and damage estimating.

Individuals with these skills may pursue automotive technician job opportunities which include service technician, service writer, assistant service manager and shop foreman. Collision repair jobs include refinishing and non-structural repair technician.

Modern vehicles are manufactured in a great variety of shapes and sizes, and the technology used in them is growing more sophisticated every year. They contain complex computer and electronic systems, and the technicians who work on them have to be highly trained, skilled professionals who are competent in math, science and computer technology. Communication and management skills are equally important for success in this field.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of automotive service technicians and mechanics is projected to grow 9 percent from 2012 to 2022. With some employers reporting difficulty finding workers who have the right skills and education, job opportunities for qualified applicants are very good.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes jobseekers who have completed formal postsecondary training programs – especially candidates with training in advanced automotive technology, such as hybrid fuel or computer systems – should enjoy the best job prospects. Those without formal automotive training are likely to face strong competition for entry-level jobs. Wages are good, and opportunities are excellent for a person eager to learn and willing to work.
