Not a typical student? Don’t worry, York Technical College knows how to help

Maybe you don’t know what exactly lies in your future. What you do know is that you’re ready for college. Perhaps you know exactly what you want to study. Then again, maybe you don’t. That’s why York Technical College offers student support resources to help you have a successful college experience.

Students have different needs

If you’ve been out of school for a number of years, perhaps the idea of returning to the classroom is daunting. Maybe you’re concerned about how you will balance a job, family and other responsibilities. That’s why at community colleges you’ll find counselors to assist you not only in academics but also in your personal life.

Attention to academics

While not every community college is the same, all colleges will offer some kind of academic counseling in which students can take personality assessments and learn about careers and salaries. At most colleges, students also benefit from enrichment and academic success workshops, one-on-one counseling and contact with counselors by phone and email.

Some colleges offer more intense academic counseling for those with challenges. For example, York Technical College offers comprehensive academic counseling to students from low-income families, students who are first to attend college in their family and students who have disabilities.

York Technical College is paying closer attention to their first-year students through comprehensive programs that include academic counseling.

If you plan to attend community college for two years and transfer to a four-year institution, it’s important to work closely with the university transfer department counselors at your community college. They will make sure that your courses will transfer successfully to the college or university you plan to attend. The counselors help you meet your deadlines.

The PROMISE Program

The PROMISE Program is a federal TRIO program also known as Student Support Services (SSS), which serves to motivate students towards the successful completion of their post-secondary education. This program provides free individual or small group tutoring, counseling and academic advising, college transfer assistance, college success workshops, and other support services. Space for this program is limited, and selections are made based upon student needs.

Special Resources

The Special Resources Office coordinates services and accommodations for students with physical, learning, and psychological challenges. Special scholarships are available such as the Adults in Transition program which assists single parents, displaced homemakers, and unemployed or underemployed dislocated workers in their transition to new employment through education and training. The Challenge program provides services to students who enter programs not traditionally associated with their gender. Awards may include scholarships for academic achievement, childcare or gas allowances, or tuition assistance. Other services may include academic and career counseling, life skills training, advising, and tracking of academic progress.
